What is CNC Machining

CNC stands for "Computer Numerical Control, " and CNC machining is a manufacturing process in which equipment and tools are operated by programmed computer instructions.

The process controls a variety of complex machinery, such as CNC mills, CNC lathes, CNC lasers, waterjets, and Electrical Discharge Machines (EDMs), to accomplish three-dimensional cutting tasks.

How CNC machining works

Once the CNC is activated, the product file is programmed into the software and assigned to the appropriate tools and machines that will perform the specified cutting task.

The CNC machining process consists of the following stages:

- Designing the CAD model

- Converting CAD files into CNC programs

- Preparation of CNC machines and tools

- CNC Milling: Removal of material from a workpiece using a multi-point rotary tool.

The basic milling machine consists of a 3-axis system (X, Y and Z), which is still one of the most popular and widely used machining processes.

In 3-axis machining, the workpiece remains stationary and the rotary tool cuts along the x, y and z axes.

Meanwhile, most newer milling machines can accommodate two additional axes.

4-axis CNC machining and 5-axis CNC machining offer greater versatility, and they are often used for the production of high-precision parts.

- CNC Turning: The removal of material from a rotating workpiece using a single point cutting tool.

In CNC turning, a CNC machine (usually a lathe or a lathe) feeds a cutting tool in a linear motion along the surface of a rotating workpiece, removing material from the circumference until the desired diameter is reached.

Most CNC lathes consist of two axes: the X-axis and the Z-axis.
