4140 alloy tool steel tempering process improvement Adjustment of tempering temperature and time

4140 alloy tool steel has high hardness and brittleness after quenching, and needs to be tempered.

The general tempering temperature can be selected between 550-650℃.

In order to obtain better comprehensive mechanical properties, segmented tempering can be adopted.

For example, first temper at 580-600℃ for 1-2 hours, and then temper at 620-640℃ for 1-2 hours.

This segmented tempering can more effectively eliminate quenching internal stress, make martensite decomposition more uniform, and improve the toughness and plasticity of steel.

The control of tempering time is also very important.

In addition to considering the basic tempering time mentioned above, it also needs to be adjusted according to the size of the round bar.

For round bars with larger diameters (greater than 50mm), the tempering time can be appropriately extended by 30-50% to ensure that the internal structure can also be fully tempered.

Optimization of tempering cooling method

The traditional cooling method for 4140 alloy tool steel after tempering is cooling in air.

In order to further refine the structure and improve the performance, furnace cooling to 300-400℃ and then air cooling can be adopted.

The furnace cooling process can make the structure slowly transform at a lower temperature, reduce the structure stress, and is conducive to the precipitation of fine and dispersed carbides, improving the wear resistance and fatigue resistance of the steel.
