Strengthen 5120h Steel Round Bars Surface Treatment Process - China

5120H steel (corresponding to the Chinese grade 20CrMnTiH) is a low-alloy carburizing steel, which is often used to manufacture parts such as gears and shafts that require high surface hardness and good core toughness.

The purpose of its surface treatment is usually to improve wear resistance, corrosion resistance or appearance.

Common processes are as follows: Surface protection treatment (anti-corrosion)

If you need to improve the corrosion resistance of 5120H steel round bars, you can further perform surface treatment after heat treatment: 1 - Electroplating/chemical plating - Zinc plating (Zn): Through electroplating or hot-dip galvanizing, a silver-white protective layer is formed, which can resist salt spray corrosion for more than 500 hours and is suitable for humid environments.

- Nickel plating (Ni)/chromium plating (Cr): The nickel plating layer is uniform and bright, and the chrome plating layer has high hardness (up to 1000HV), which is both decorative and corrosion-resistant.

It is often used for appearance parts or precision shafts.

- Chemical nickel-phosphorus plating (Ni-P): No electroplating layer, uniform surface, suitable for complex shape parts, and better corrosion resistance than electroplated nickel.

2 - Blackening (oxidation treatment)

- Process: Immerse 5120H steel round bars in a solution of concentrated alkali and oxidant (such as sodium nitrite), and react at about 130°C to form a black Fe₃O₄ film (thickness 0.5~1μm).

- Effect: Low cost, dense oxide film formed on the surface, medium corrosion resistance, often used for internal parts or non-precision parts.

3 - Phosphating treatment

- Process: Treat 5120H steel round bars with manganese phosphate or zinc salt solution to form a zinc phosphate/manganese film (thickness 1~5μm) on the surface, and the surface is gray-black.

- Effect: The film layer is porous and can absorb lubricating oil, improve wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and is often used for rust prevention or mating surface lubrication between processes (such as pre-assembly treatment of gears).
