Optimizing Heat Treatment Processes Jis Skh51 Material Mill Steel - China

The heat treatment process of JIS SKH51 material is relatively complicated, and it must go through a series of processes such as annealing, quenching, and tempering.

The purpose of annealing is to eliminate stress, reduce hardness, make the microstructure uniform, and facilitate quenching.

The annealing temperature is generally 860~880℃.

During quenching, due to its poor thermal conductivity, it is generally carried out in two stages.

First, preheat at 800~850℃ (to avoid causing large thermal stress), then quickly heat to the quenching temperature of 1190~1290℃ (the temperature is different when different grades are actually used), and then oil cool or air cool or gas cool.

The factory uses salt furnace heating, and vacuum furnaces are also widely used.

After quenching, the internal structure still retains a part (about 30%) of the residual austenite that has not been transformed into martensite, which affects the performance of high-speed steel.

In order to transform the residual austenite and further improve the hardness and wear resistance, it is generally necessary to temper 2~3 times, with a tempering temperature of 560℃ and each time keeping warm for 1 hour.
