ASTM 4340 Steel Manufacturing Process Steps:

1 - Preheating: Before forging, 4340M alloy steel needs to be properly preheated.

The preheating temperature is usually between 800°C and 1200°C, the purpose is to improve the plasticity of the steel and reduce the risk of stress concentration and cracks during forging.

2 - Forging: The preheated 4340M alloy steel is placed in the forging die and pressure is applied at an appropriate temperature for forging.

The forging temperature is generally between 900°C and 1200°C, depending on the composition of the alloy steel and the required shape.

Through forging, the uniformity, density and mechanical properties of the steel can be improved.

3 - Quenching and tempering: After forging, quenching and tempering treatment is usually required to eliminate internal stress and improve the hardness and strength of the steel.

The quenching and tempering temperature and time depend on the specific alloy composition and requirements, generally kept at 800°C to 900°C for several hours, and then air-cooled or oil-cooled.

4 - Surface treatment: After forging, the 4340M alloy steel can be surface treated, such as removing oxide scale, polishing, etc., to improve the surface quality and aesthetics.

5 - Heat treatment: According to specific requirements, the forged 4340M alloy steel may need further heat treatment, such as quenching, tempering, etc., to adjust its structure and performance.
