AISI 4140 steel round bar heat treatment process

Hot rolled AISI 4140 steel round bar usually needs subsequent heat treatment to meet different application requirements.

1 - Annealing

- Process: heating to 830-850°C and slow cooling.

- Purpose: reduce hardness and improve processing performance.

2 - Normalizing

- Process: heating to 870-900°C and air cooling.

- Purpose: refine grains and improve comprehensive mechanical properties.

3 - Quenching and tempering (quenching + tempering)

- Quenching: heating to 840-880°C, oil or water cooling.

- Tempering: between 500-650°C, adjusted according to performance requirements.

- Purpose: obtain the best strength, toughness and wear resistance.
