Improvement of quenching process for AISI 4140 steel round bar

- **Heating temperature optimization**

- Traditional quenching heating temperature for AISI 4140 steel round bar is generally 840 - 860℃.

In order to more accurately control the austenite grain size, zone heating can be adopted.

First, preheat at a lower temperature (780 - 800℃) for 30 - 45 minutes, which helps to reduce thermal stress.

Then quickly heat up to the quenching temperature of 850 - 870℃, and the heating rate can be controlled at 10 - 15℃/min.

In this temperature range, the alloying elements can be fully dissolved into the austenite, providing good conditions for the subsequent quenching microstructure transformation.

- Using precise temperature control equipment, such as a heating furnace with a thermocouple and a PID controller, the temperature fluctuation can be controlled within ±5℃, ensuring the temperature uniformity of the entire round bar during the heating process.

- During the quenching process, the temperature of the quenching medium should be controlled.

For polymer quenchants, the optimal operating temperature range is 20 - 40℃.

At the same time, the speed and method of immersion of the round bar during quenching are also critical.

The round bar should be immersed in the quenchant vertically and quickly, and the quenchant should be properly stirred during the quenching process to ensure uniform cooling and avoid local overheating or overcooling.
