Aralia elata is an upright deciduous small tree or shrub growing up to 6 m in height, native to eastern China, Korea, and Japan.

In Japan it is known as tara-no-ki (Katakana: タラノ& #12461;), and in Korea as dureupnamu (두릅나 무).

The bark is rough and gray with prickles.

The leaves are alternate, large, 60–120 cm long, and double pinnate.

The shoots called dureup are eaten as the deliciousdishesin China and Korea.

The barkand root are also used in Chinese traditional medicinein the treatment of stomach, diuresis, desiccant, promoting blood flow and eliminating pain, duodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis, hepatitis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, edema.

The triterpene glycosides isolated from the roots ofAralia elata are identical with the araloside A, B, and C.
