Description of Spherical Bearings

Spherical bearing is composed by top plate, base plate, convex middle plate and

two Teflon plates of different composition.

Opposite the top plate, it is a

concave spherical in the base plate, and the PTFE plate between them.

Beam

rotation through spherical surfaces and PTFE plate sliding; stainless steel plate

on the top plate and another PTFE plates on the intermediate steel plate

perform the second sliding surface, realized beam stretching displacement

produced by temperature factors.

Spherical bridge bearing transfers force reliably and rotation performance is

consistent.

Spherical bridge bearing has great bearing capacity, large

displacement and large turning angles, so it is more suitable for wide bridge and

curved bridge.

No rubber is used in the Spherical bearing so it never happen

that brittle rubber caused by low temperature affecting the bearing rotation, and

Spherical bearing is especially suitable for cold areas.

Types of Spherical Bearings

Similar to pot bearing, spherical bridge bearings are available in fixed type, guided type and free sliding types .

1 - Fixed type bearing only allows for rotations, any longitudinal or transversal

movement is restrained.

2 - Guided type has edge steel guide to accommodate unidirectional movements.

3 - Free sliding type bearing can slid in all directions.

Features of Spherical Bearings

1 - Allows for large displacement.

2 - Accommodate larger rotations than pot bearing in excess of +/- 0.03 radians.

3 - Unlimited movement capability in any directions.

4 - Excellent self-alignment capability.

5 - Minimum sliding friction coefficient.

6 - Dimpled PTFE disc is fitted in 1/2 depth of the concave steel plate for higher

load bearing capacity.

7 - PTEF disc with cavities for containing lubricant to reduce sliding friction.

8 - Complying with BS EN-1337, KS4424, AASHO, ISO or other custom

standards.

9 - Easy installation.

10 - Low cost maintenance.

Applications of Spherical Bearings

Ideal for structures with bearings of large turning angles.

Bridges with big torsions.

Bridges in low temperatures lower than -30° C.

Wide and curved bridges.

Installation details of Spherical Bearings

1 - Spherical Bearings shall not be used on bridges where the concrete for the

beam, pier and platform is lower than 35° C, unless specially approved by the

designer.

2 - Install Spherical Bearings: To adjust bearing level putting wedges under

bearing base plate, and to make sure (real factory) Spherical Bearing for Bridge

base plate above the pier and platform top 20 ~ 50mm.

Center the Spherical

bearing to the right place.

Filling in bolt holes and bearing bottom cushion with

epoxy mortar.

3 - The Spherical Bearings shall connect with the beam, pier and platform with

the embedded bolts.

If necessary, welding to the embedded steel plate is

allowed, but cautions shall be taken to bearing and concrete being damaged by

the high heat from the steel bearing being welded.

4 - When installation, the level of the Spherical Bearings shall accord with the

design, and the supporting face shall be horizontal and smooth.

The difference

in height of the four corners of bearing shall not exceed 2mm.
