forging

l6 tool steels are forged at temperatures between 1079°c (1975°f) and 871°c (1600°f).

hardening

preheating: heat l6 steel to 621-677°c (1150-1250°f) and equilibrate.

soak for 30 minutes for the first inch of thickness and 15 minutes for each additional inch.

tempering

temper immediately after quenching, and when tempering at 204°c (400°f), hold at that temperature for a minimum of 4 hours, then air cool to ambient temperature.

to minimize the possibility of cracking, steel should be tempered immediately after hardening and should be heated slowly to the required tempering temperature.

annealing

l6 tool steels are annealed at 788°c (1450°f) followed by slow cooling at a rate of up to 4°c (40°f) per hour.
