The gear surface bearing capacity is related to the hardness of the gear surface; the higher hardness, the higher bearing capacity.

According to the gear surface hardness, the gear transmission is divided into two types, namely hard surface gear transmission( gear surface hardness above 350HBS) and soft surface gear transmission ( gear surface hardness less than 350HBS) .

The choice of the material

It is commonly used quenched and tempered steel, quenched steel, carburized and quenched steel, nitrided steel to manufacture gears.

Large size gear usually use cast steel ( its strength is slightly lower than forged steel) .

Light carrying open gear drive can use gray cast steel ( poor mechanical property) .

Ductile Iron can be partially replaced by steel gear.

In order to increase the gear bending strength, we generally choose high quality alloy steel whose characteristics of mechanical property, harden ability, hardened layer micro- structure , hardness, carbon potential layer depth distribution are higher.
