Features

Plasma arc welding (PAW) is an advanced version of the tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process.

The arc is formed between the electrode (usually made of tungsten) and the workpiece.

The main difference with GTAW is that in PAW the plasma arc can be separated from the shielding gas blanket by positioning the electrode inside the welding torch body.

Virtually all welding arcs are (partially ionized) plasmas, but the plasma in plasma arc welding is a constricted arc.

The constriction not only increases the temperature of the arc, but also gives it a thin beam shape.

This enables welding with high speeds, greater penetration, a narrow HAZ (heat affected zone) and minimal heat input.
