Herringbone gear

The herringbone gear is a kind of cylindrical gear.

One side of the gear tooth direction is left- hand tooth, the other side is right- hand tooth, and the samespecification helical gears of the two- hand helix are assembled back- to- back together.

In order to eliminate the transverse force on the helical gear, the other helical gear is made in the opposite direction from the symmetry.

It looks like a Chinese word “人”, so this double- helical gear is called herringbone gear.

Transmission and application

The herringbone transmission adopts the method that herringbone gear stand transfers the torque of main motor or generator system to the roller.

It is utilized widely in the transmission system such as the twin- screw pump, rolling mill and so on.

Herringbone gear cutting

Relative to the ordinary gear processing, the herringbone gear cutting technique is more complex and difficult.

Common processing methods generally use finger- type milling cutters.

The both sides of the herringbone gear shaft can be split to manufacture then combined together as needed; or though manufactured in a whole, there should be necessary grinding undercut between the effective gear surfaces of the two sides; or be manufactured by gear hobbing, but the tooth surface of the both sides also need to be apart.

The key point of the herringbone gear processing

The intersection points of the left and right spiral lines of the herringbone gear can constitute many planes.

Generally the plane of symmetry in gear end face is called herringbone center plane.

Restricted by the gear reducer structure and in order to meet the condition of the normal gear meshing transmission, the herringbone gear shaft must be put right position and the admissible position error of the herringbone center plane must be controlled within the permissible range of assembling adjustment when assembling.
