Introduction

The application of the gear is very wide, such as the lathe, aircraft, steamship, and so on.

There are a great variety of gears such as cylindrical spur gear, cylindrical helical gear, spiral gear, straight bevel gear, spiral bevel gear, worm wheel, etc.

Among them the usually applied and simple is cylindrical spur gear, also called standard cylindrical gear.

The spur gear is commonly known as the straight toothed cylindrical gear which is relative to the helical gear.

The standard spur gear: when meeting the conditions that the modulus is standard value, the pressure angle is 20°( standard value) , the tooth thickness of the reference circle is equal to the tooth space width, the pitch angle is 0°, the addendum coefficient is 1 ( standard value) , tip clearance coefficient is 0.25 ( standard value) , and the modification coefficient is 0, this involute cylindrical gear is called standard straight toothed gear ( standard spur gear) .

Processing Methods

There are two processing methods of the gear teeth shape.

One is forming process method, which is used by the formed milling cutter that is full compliance with the shape of the gear tooth space to cut out the tooth profile like milling gear.

The other one is generating method, which is utilizing the gear cutter meshes together with the driven gear to cut out the tooth profile like hobbing and slotting gear.

Processing Technique:

The spur gear manufacturing process is usually includes the gear blank processing, tooth surface processing, heat treatment and the finish machining of the tooth surface.

In the program process, we adopt many different process program in accordance to the different gear structure, accuracy grade, production batch and environment.

The process:

1 - The form of the gear blank: forging, bar material, or casting

2 - Rough process：remove the extra margin

3 - Half finished turning: lathe, gear hobbing, gear slotting

4 - Heat treatment: quenching and tempering, carburizing, quenching，high frequency induction heat quenching of the tooth surface

5 - Fine turning: benchmark finishing, gear teeth shape finishing
