Wood Dust Manure - India

Wood Dust is a by-product of pulverizing wood with a saw; it is composed of fine particles of wood.

Wood Dust can be used as soil mulch; as soil amendment/conditioner by incorporating into soil; and as a storage media for root crops such as carrot, radish, beet, turnip, ginger, turmeric, colocassia, etc.

for increasing their shelf life.

It is ideal for mushroom growing as well as for composting.

Mulching with Wood Dust breaks the impact of falling raindrops, reduces soil erosion and crusting, lowers the summer soil temperature, increases penetration of water into the soil, conserves soil moisture and prevents weed growth.

All these positive impacts of mulching double the production of vegetables, fruits, flowers and arable crops.

We found soil moisture percentage in mulched plots twice as high, summer soil temperature reduction by 8-13oC, and time required for weeding reduced by two-thirds.

Incorporation of Wood Dust into soil improves soil structure and tilth by adding organic matter and forming humus, increases nutrient and water holding capacity of soil and improves water drainage, especially in heavy soils like clay.

However, manure/vermicompost should be added to compensate soil nitrogen depletion and to maintain good growth.

Application

Mulching: 1-3 inch thick layer on the soil surface around the stem of plants Incorporation into Soil: Mix Wood Dust and Vermicompost in 1: 1 ratio and apply @ 100 g per pot, 500 g per plant and 5 kg per m2 in the kitchen garden; incorporate into top 10-15 cm soil using a Spade/Khurpi/Hoe Storage Media for Root Crops: Spread a layer of dry Wood Dust, 3-6 inch thick, on the ground, spread root crops and cover with 6-8 inch thick dry Wood Dust

Composting: Add the available quantity with cow dung during composting
